Abstract

ABSTRACT

 

The study on "An Analysis of Fengshui and Patirupadesavasa in Buddhist Texts " had three objectives: 1) to study the principle of Fengshui (Chineses belief of how to locate a building), 2) to study the principle of Patirupadesavasa (living in a suitable region), and 3) to analyze the principle of Fengshui and Patirupadesavasa in Buddhist Texts. This research applied the documentary research with collecting data from the primary sources. Analysis of the data used the analysis of the content and the summary of the research used presenting the descriptive results of the research. 

Results of the Research

1) The word Fengshui originates from Teochew dialect language. The word “Feng” mean the wind. The word “Shui” mean the water. Therefore, the word “Fengshui” means the wind and water and the science of the prediction of the Chinese people about finding the suitable places to the living and dead people with the balance of the nature and environment influencing the life of human. The Fengshui was the science of the relationship and combination of the wind and water, the natural environment such as the process leading to the possibility of the nature, preparing the environment good. The Fengshui consisted of 4 parts: fortune, direction, strategically located place and auspices or season. The principle of Fengshui must use the compass, Ruler, Luo Pan and Chinese calendar or Lae-Yig-thaw Book.

2) The Patirupadesavasa was living in a suitable region appeared in Cakka-Sutta and Mangala Sutta divided into 2 meanings: the meaning in the personification and the meaning in the reliance on Dhamma.The meaning in the personification was the suitable region in the living. However, the meaning in the reliance on Dhamma was the suitable region in the conduct on Dhamma by having many scholars. It was divided into 3 things: 1) the place where the Four Assemblies (monks, nuns, lay-followers, and female lay-followers passed by, 2) place where the Buddha attained the Enlightenment, preached the first sermon, and 3) the middle country where was the birth place of the Buddha, the private Buddha, the great Attendant Monk, the Buddha’s Father, The Buddha’s Mother and the World–King.

3)The belief on Fengshui in the Thai society was reinforcing the industriousness to do the good thing for the family and oneself reinforcing the fortune to make the confidence to oneself, family and others, finding the site to do the business, finding the propitious thing for oneself and the family. The disappointment of Fengshui was paying the money for buying the things in reinforcing the fortune. Some was the credulity. The belief on Patirupadesavasa was finding the good place to reinforce the fortune, being in the good environment, meeting the good thing, people and place. It was the good action to the people. The people should reinforce the Fengshui with making the merit, finding the scholars to be born in the good place or make the mind calm in the internal and external, and make the good thing to Thai society.
